Mandrel-Bent Tubing & Stepped Collector Design
The primary tubes on every Hooker Competition long tube header are mandrel-bent to maintain constant inside diameter through each bend. Crush-bent alternatives pinch the tube walls and create restriction points that choke airflow at high RPM. Our 1Ⅷ-inch primaries keep velocity consistent from the exhaust port all the way to the collector merge.
Each collector uses a stepped transition that gradually expands the flow path before the gases combine. This design reduces reversion waves that can push exhaust back into adjacent cylinders during valve overlap. The result is cleaner cylinder filling and measurable torque gains in the 3,500–6,500 RPM range where most street and bracket engines operate.

Fitment & Installation Notes
We machine every flange on a CNC mill to match OEM port dimensions and bolt-hole spacing. The headers mount using your factory studs or bolts without requiring elongated slots or shims. Depending on your chassis, you may need to temporarily lower the steering centerlink or remove the starter for clearance during installation.
Exhaust System Compatibility
The 3-inch slip-fit collectors accept most aftermarket X-pipes, H-pipes, and cat-back systems designed for Competition headers. If your existing exhaust uses 2½-inch tubing, we include stepped reducers in every kit. Ceramic Coating & Heat Management
Every Competition header ships with a high-temperature ceramic coating applied inside and out. The coating reflects radiant heat away from brake lines, starter solenoids, and steering components that run near the primary tubes. Underhood temperatures typically drop 200–300°F compared to uncoated mild-steel headers.
The ceramic finish also seals the tubing against oxidation and road salt. We’ve tested coated headers in freeze/thaw cycles and found zero rust breakthrough after two winters of street use. Most modern EFI engines will adapt to the increased airflow through closed-loop fuel trim adjustments, but a custom tune will unlock the full performance potential. If you're running stock programming, expect to see 60–70 percent of the available power gains. A dyno tune that adjusts spark timing, air-fuel ratio, and transmission shift points typically adds another 8–12 horsepower on top of the baseline header gains.
The standard 1⅞-inch primaries work well for street engines up to 450 horsepower and naturally aspirated race engines up to 550 horsepower. If you're building a high-RPM road-race motor or a boosted combination over 600 horsepower, consider stepping up to our 1⅞-inch or 2-inch Competition headers. Larger primaries shift the torque curve higher in the RPM range, so oversizing can hurt low-end response on mild street engines.
Most installations require removing the starter and temporarily lowering the steering centerlink or idler arm for clearance. On some chassis with tight firewall spacing, raising the engine 1–2 inches with a floor jack makes it easier to slide the headers into position. You do not need to pull the motor or remove the transmission in typical applications. Budget four to six hours for a first-time install working alone.
Hooker competition long tube headers are designed for off-road and racing use. If your state requires emissions testing, you'll need to retain functional catalytic converters in your exhaust system. We offer CARB-compliant versions of select Competition headers with built-in high-flow catalytic converters for California and states that follow California emissions standards. Check your local regulations before ordering.
Use the included collector gaskets and high-strength band clamps rather than welding the joint initially. Tighten the clamps to 45 ft-lbs after the engine reaches operating temperature—this allows the headers to expand and settle into position. After your first few heat cycles, retorque the clamps and check for leaks with a spray bottle of soapy water while the engine idles. If you plan to weld the collectors later, run the headers for at least 100 miles first to confirm final fitment.
Ceramic-coated headers require no special maintenance beyond normal exhaust system care. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or wire brushes on the coating—mild soap and water are sufficient for cleaning road grime. If you notice surface rust on exposed steel areas like flange edges, apply a light coat of high-temperature paint to prevent corrosion from spreading. The ceramic coating itself is warrantied against flaking or discoloration for the life of the product.
